Dolch words

April 19, 2017

The Dolch word list, compiled by Edward William Dolch in the 1930s and 1940s, is a collection of frequently used English words that includes both basic sight words like “a,” “an,” and “the,” and commonly used words that are difficult to sound out, such as “the,” “said,” and “was.” The list was developed to help teachers and students concentrate on learning the most frequently used words in the English language, and to promote the development of reading and spelling skills by teaching students to quickly and easily recognize these words.

The Dolch word list is a list of frequently used English words compiled by Edward William Dolch, a professor at the University of Illinois, in the 1930s and 1940s. The list is divided into categories, such as “pre-primer,” “primer,” “first grade,” “second grade,” and “third grade,” and contains words that students in those grade levels are expected to recognize and know how to read and spell.

The Dolch list includes commonly used words that are not easily sounded out, such as “the,” “said,” and “was,” as well as basic sight words that students need to recognize by sight, such as “a,” “an,” and “the.” The list was created as a way to help teachers and students focus on the most frequently used words in the English language, and to develop reading and spelling skills by learning to recognize these words quickly and easily.

The Dolch list has been widely used in elementary schools in the United States, and is still used today as a tool for teaching reading and spelling. The list has also been adapted and expanded over the years to include additional words and phrases that are commonly used in modern English.
